[Cs-third-year] 2025 USRA/USRI Updates

Good Afternoon,

This email is to inform you of general information as well as updates to the USRA (Undergraduate Student Research Awards) Summer NSERC program AND the USRI (Undergraduate Student Research Internship), a paid research opportunity for next summer.

I have provided information about the USRA & USRI under separate headings (there is slightly different criteria for both).

NSERC USRA Program

Who can successfully apply?
-You must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
-You must have a minimum average of 75%
-You can be in your 4th year of study

These positions are 16 weeks in length starting on May 1st and ending August 31st.

Over the next couple months it is your responsibility to contact your own Computer Science Faculty member to see if they would take you on for this program.

The transcript you attach to your application must meet the following requirements:

  *   Your name, the university's name and the program in which you're enrolled appear
  *   Grades up to December 31st of the year preceding the award are included


Western's "Academic Record" format meets NSERC's transcript requirements (you must contact me Sara Willemse) for this prior to February 5th (tentatively).

If you are undertaking a USRA at Western but your home university is different, you must attach an official transcript from your home university to your online application, including the legend.

Please contact me directly about interest in the programs as well as with the name of your supervisor.

USRI Program

Please find below and attached information about an opportunity with UWO called USRI (it is similar to the NSERC USRA Program advertised earlier this year).

  *   Students will receive a minimum of $9632 from the 16-week internship.

  *   With the form that you MUST fill out when applying, students will be given the option to disclose that they are a member of equity deserving groups, such as but not limited to Black, Indigenous, students of color, students with disabilities, students who self-identify as LGBTQ2S+, immigrants and newcomers, and women on the attached application form.

  *   We acknowledge that equity deserving groups often encounter additional barriers in securing a willing supervisor to support their applications. An application form is attached for you to apply to USRI with the second page being optional.



More eligibility criteria below:



1.       Students must have been enrolled at Western in an undergraduate program in Winter 2025 and should be planning to attend Western in Fall 2025.

2.       Students with a cumulative average of at least 70%. Preference will be given to those in Year 3 and those with primary program in the Faculty of Science.

3.       Students must be available to participate in research activity for 16 weeks between May 1 and August 31, 2023, under the supervisor from a faculty mentor with an appointment in the Faculty of Science.

You are required to find your own supervisor (Faculty member) in order to complete your application process.  HOW? You can choose to contact from any of the Faculty members on our Website (link below) that have the title of Assistant Professor (except for Dr. Servos), Associate Professor and Professor.
